Cannabis Microbusinesses vs. Dispensaries

With so many exciting things happening across Michigan’s legal cannabis industry, here at IndiGrow, we’re thrilled to be at the forefront of microbusinesses in the state. We take immense pride in providing our local Muskegon community with only the best, small-batch craft cannabis flower and products.

We also love to use our platform to educate about everything regarding cannabis consumption. In one of our previous blogs, we talked in greater detail about the benefits of cannabis. In this blog, we’ll cover another crucial subject: the difference between cannabis microbusinesses and dispensaries.

Cannabis Dispensaries: How are they different from microbusinesses?

First, it is always important to understand the various terms that are associated with cannabis consumption, so let’s talk ‘dispensaries.’ Simply put: a cannabis dispensary (or provisioning center) is a state-licensed facility in which many different products that are sourced from many different brands are sold. Think of a dispensary as a liquor store, whereas in this analogy, a microbusiness would be a microbrewery.

While dispensaries are certainly more widespread, there are many more advantages associated with microbusinesses when it comes to overall patient wellness. Keep reading to find out what they are!

The Advantages of a Cannabis Microbusiness

Next, let’s talk about what really makes a cannabis microbusiness the highly sought-after destination for natural wellness:

  • A cannabis microbusiness is only allowed to cultivate, process, and sell cannabis products from just one location.
  • Cannabis microbusinesses are only permitted to grow and sell products they cultivate and/or formulate.
  • This means that products from outside brands are prohibited.
  • A cannabis microbusiness can only grow 150 plants at a time, compared to other operations, in which plant counts can stretch into the thousands.

Recently, our owners/operators were featured in an excellent article by Second Wave Media. Here’s what they had to say in regards to the benefits of microbusinesses:

“A dispensary is like a liquor store. They sell other people’s products there. A microbusiness is like a microbrewery, where we create our own products in-house and we only sell those products. The store looks much different than a dispensary because we only carry our own products. Think of a farmer’s market, where you can talk with the people who grew or produced their products. We’re similar to that.”

— Karen Kekelik, administrator

“It’s a different cannabis model—a closed loop if you will—where we have total control over the plant cultivation, harvesting, curing, processing and sales. This is truly small-batch cannabis. We nurture our plants from seed to harvest and believe the quality, look, and feel of each strain will be obvious to the consumer. We look at what the plant needs and follow that, versus forcing the plants into a timeline that doesn’t bring out the best product.”

— Steven Kekelik, CEO

As you can see, there are many benefits to microbusinesses that extend throughout many aspects of cannabis production, as well as the overall consumer experience.
